Wilhelm Werth attended the Reformed parish school in Barmen, the secondary school from 1847-55 and was confirmed in the Gemearke church by Pastor Roffhack in 1854. His apprenticeship was served from 1855-58 in House Louis Nicolier fils in Bevey (Lake Geneva), then he worked in his fathers business and in 1859 he served in the Emperor Franz Grenadier Guards Regiment no. 2 in Berlin. At th mobilisation of 1866 he became a Lieutenant in the reserve. As a member of the Infantry Regiment no.55 (Detmold) he served in the war against France, the siege and entry in Metz, the winter campaign in Jura, Pontarlier. His detailed war diary later often served as basis for his war yarns. He returned home, decorated with the Iron Cross, and entered his father's business.
He was guardian of the Poor and District Chairman of the Executive council of the Vereinshaus in Barmen, since 1866 president of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, since 1886 president of the society for Bergische History, member of the public soup kitchen, acting chairman of the branch of the Red Cross.
In 1858 he entered the Concordia Company. During the years 1882-1888 he was a municipal coucillor, but would not stand for re-election in order to be able to devote more time in the service of the Reformed parish Gemarke which lay close to his heart.
During 1874-1877 he was presbyter for poor relief, from 1877-1878 churchmaster, and after the death of his father he tok over the 'Rendantur" or financial management of the church, which he managed till his death.
He served his congregation for a full 36 years and his memory is honoured in highly. On sunday morning 17 April 1910 his life was brought to an end by a stroke.
From the house where he was born, no 31 Muhlenweg, the body was brought to the Reformed cemetary in kingelholl under great public participation.

Johann married Sophie Emilie GREEFF on 20 Aug 1873. Sophie (daughter of Joh Peter GREEFF and Sophie Emilie BREDT) was born on 28 Dec 1845 in Barmen, Germany; died on 13 Jul 1921 in Benneckenstein, Harz, Germany. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Sophie was born as the First daughter after 9 sons in the old house at no. 7 Reformed Church street, like all her siblings. After completion of her school training she attended a finishing school in Clarens (Lake Geneva) and following the death of her mother she had to run the household for her father. She accompanied her father on his last journey to America in 1871.
She bore her husband 8 children in the old house on Reformed Church street, thereafter moving with him to the Werth family home in Muhlenweg.

The firm "Ehrenberg & Leuschner" was aquired by Joh. Peter Greeff (Bornefeld) in 1829 and promptly renamed "J.P. Greeff & G.W. Sohn".Apparently it was the son Joh. Peter Greeff (Bredt) who brought tribute to his father in this way. He was a member of the Concordia Society in Barmen in 1824 and must accordingly already have lived in Barmen at the time.

According to notes made by Joh. Peter in Dusseldorf the firm also produced other articles which were in demand in the market, e.g. snuff boxes, brooches, cuff links, tie pins, also brooches carved from horn and similar material.
The main thrust thoughout was the metal button manufacture which had gradually conquered the whole German market and was more and more supplanting the French articles in foreign markets.
The largest manufacturing centres were Barmen and Ludenscheid.

Johann Peter was a businessman in Elberfield on the Aue, but moved to Barmen in 1829.

In the reformed parish of Elberfield he was Scholarch for a period.
At his death in 1837 Joh. Peter Greeff left behind a flourishing factory.

Johann married Clara Wilhelmine BORNEFELD on 12 Jan 1802. Clara (daughter of Johann Daniel BORNEFELD and Christine MORIAN) was born in 1784; died in 12 June1860. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Peter owned "Greeff-Bredt & Comp." in Barmen and lived at no. 7 Reformed church street (today Zwingli street) In his private life he also called himself Greeff-Bredt.

He was elected churchmaster of the Reformed parish Gemarke in 1838,1851 and 1861.

In 1824 he joined the Concordia company and became it's director in 1849/50. In May 1849 he was a member of the Burgerwehr (Citizens Defence) that defended Barmen against the Elberfield Democrats.
