- He went to school in Frankfurt am Main and then studied agriculture in Hohenheim and Guttingen. Then he served as trainee, volumtary worker and manager on estates in Weende by Gottingen, Bollbrexen by Paderborn, Lindheim in Upper Hessia and Hubsch on Lower Rhine. On 1 November 1906 he took over the estate Moosburg, as seed farm with steam driven dairy, pig and sheep breeding, market gardening and fruit farming.
He served 1902/03 in the Husser Regiment no 9 in Strassburg and on 19 December 1905 became lieutenant of the Reserve in the Regiment; in 1910 he transferred to the Landwehr cavalry, on 24 December 1914 he became senior lieutenant and captain of cavalry on 30 April 1916.In the World War he was initially aide-de-camp on the staff of the Reserve Field Artillery Regiment no. 52 then on the staff of the 101st reserve Infantry Brigade, thenCommander of the Munitions Column and Trains of the XXIV Reserve corps, since 1 August 1916 Commander of the Reserve Vehicle Fleet Column 84, later 750, Retreat and demobilisation of the troop December 1918.
