  Ryan studied medicine and joined the British Army in 1913, served in Frnace during the War and was promoted to captain and then to major. He met his wife on a holiday trip to Switzerland in 1928. After one year's service in England he went to India for 5 years as military doctor and after his appointment in the garrison hospital in Delhi for a further five years.
