- Karl passed his Abitur examination in 1927 in Dusseldorf, was apprentice with the Weyersberg Brothers in Solingen-Oligs until 1929, then in the Holler Carlschutte in Rendsburg.
In 1930 he went to the Grenoble University, in 1931 to Paris and Marseille with a forwarding company, 1932 in the Chamber of Industry and Commerce in Dusseldorf, 1933 to Barcelona and Valencia to the iron firm Faust y Kammann.
After a longish sorjourn in England he joined the Wupperman factory at Leverkusen-Schlebusch, from where he moved to a post as attorney with the Buttner Works Ltd. In Krefeld-Urdingen. He is lieutenant in the reserve.
