He attended the gymnasium in Elberfeld and studied theology from 1899 - 1903 in Strassburg, Greifswald, Tubingen, Halle, Bonn, Marburg and passed the first theological examination on 21 April 1903. Then he studied philosophy and German studies and history in Bonn, passed an examination for gymnastics teacher and a prize assignment. On 6 May 1905 he passed the state examination for secondary school teachers. On 15 May 1905 he started his practical training at the Friedrich Wilhelm Gymnasium in Koln, interrupted by his 1 year millitary training in the Foot Atrillery Regiment no. 7 in Koln. 1906 he resumed his training in Barmen, where he did his trial year 1907/08 at the Realgymnasium. On 1 April 1908 he was appointed as secondary school teacher. In the war he was lieutenant of the Landwehr in the Foot Artillery Regiment no.7, since 1916 with the Short Naval Gun Battalion 10 ("Big Bertha" , 42cm)
In July 191 he was elected Director of the Higher Lyceum in Barmen.
