  Ingenieur Elbe Gustav attended the technical school for mechanical and electrotechnical engineering and joined the navy. He wanted to pursue a captain's career but had to call this off because of an accident. He then founded the first electrotechnical wholesale business in Elberfeld. Moreover, as a civil engineer the supervision of the steam boilers of all the larger firms in Wuppertal was entrusted to him. In the war year 1916 he reported voluntarily as engineer to the dockyard at Friedrichsort, where he was promoted to deck officer, In autumn 1919 he came home severely ill. In 1919 he acquired an estate in Ittertal, called "Klein-Porten"
