- Carl attended the secondary school in Siegen, passed his examination for Abitur in 1898, became mining apprentice, studied in Marburg and Berlin, served in the Curassier Regiment no. 4 in Munster 1899-1900, became mining trainee in 1903, mining assessor in 1907.
From 1 November 1907 to 30 April 1911 he was assistant worker in the Royal mining Inspection Reden (Saar), from 1 May 1911 he was dierector of the trade union of the Eisenzecher Zug mine in Eiserfeld on the Sieg.
He participated in the World War from August 1914 to May 1916 as Senior Lieutenant in the Reserve in the Curassier Regiment no 4 in Flanders and Poland, as captain and company chief in Infantry Regiment no. 149 in the Carpathians, then chief of the machine gun company of the Reserve Light Infantry (Jager) Batallion no. 23 Flanders.
