  He studied chemistry with Fresenius in Wiesbaden and then went into the export and import business of his uncle Robert Greeff in London. He had to flee during the World War and started a subsidery of the English firm in America, but soon made it independent. He lived near New York. Since he had no children of his own he adopted the daughter Marjorie from his second wife's first marriage.
