- He passed his Abitur at the gymnasium in Barmen, studied law in Geneva, Leipzig and Bonn, became an articled clerk in 1908 and assessor in 1913.
At first he was informationally involved with the Barmen Bank society in Dussel dorf, but then went away to war. He was trained in the Hussar Regiment no 9 in Strassburg and then served until the end of the war with Hussar Field Regiment no.9 since middle 1917 as officer.
In1920 he became district court councillor in Elberfeld.
For the first years of marriage they lived in Dusseldorf, then in Hammerstein by Vohwinkel, and in 1916 Mrs Greeff moved to Barmen, which remained their residence (amToelleturm) until 1930. Next to it was a small farmhouse on the grounds of Haus Dussel as summer residence. In 1930 the house in Barmen was sold, the farmhouse enlarged and since then the family lived in Kamp by Dussel on an area of 10 morgen which was subdivided from the manor.
