  No date of arrival at the Cape or occupation can be found. Up till December 1671 he was a servant of Joris Jansz, an inkeeper at the Cape and during this period he was involved in trying to save the life of an unfortunate Hottentot woman who hanged herself in an outhouse of one of the freemen. Together with Angela of Bemgal he cut down the woman known as Sara, whom they thought still lived only to find, in the callous words of the Court of Hustice that "Satan had taken possession of her brutal soul".
