Simon van der Stel, besit ook die plase Wittenberg en De Zachte Vallij in Het Land van Waveren 1740 deur sy seun Gerrit bestuur, x Anna Prevot, van Calais (Charles-dogter), a. 1688 van Amsterdam op die skip "DE SCHELDE", oorlede ca.
1745.

Van der Merwe,Schalk *volgens inligting in Bybel 14.07.1673 = Kaapstad 13.08.1673. Op 8 September 1692 is die erfbrief - slegs een dag na dit aan sy pa uitgereik is - vir De Hoop in Klein Drakenstein opgestel ten gunste van Schalk met die Goewerneur Simon van der Stel se persoonlike naamtekening onder die dokument. Hier is geen sprake van 'n vroëere toesegging nie; die gebied aan die oostekant van die Bergrivier word trouens op hierdie datum eers amptelik oopgestel. De Hoop het presies dieselfde mate en oppervlakte as Kunnenberg en is geleë in die onbewerkte strook tussen die Bergrivier en die Drakensberge en daar was geen bure in die omgewing nie. Die familie het vir 105 jaar hier gewoon; In 1715 terwyl hy op kommando teen die Boesmans was, kry Schalk teëspoed op De Hoop. Die plaas is sodanig verspoel dat hy dit moes ontruim. Daarom koop hy in 1716 Wittenberg in Noorder-Paarl van Christiaan Matzdorf (Maasdorp). Die oorspronklike oppervlakte van Wittenberg was 40 morg 560 vk roede, maar Schalk ontvang in 1717 'n bykomende 30 morg 240 vk roede sodat die vergrote Wittenberg nou 'n oppervlakte van 71 morg 200vk roede beslaan. Toe sy eggenote Anna Provost in 1740 oorlede is was hulle nog op Wittenberg woonagtig. Na sy dood word dit die eiendom van sy oudste kleinseun Willem gebore 1721. Dit is hier waar drie olifante op 'n sekere dag teen die buitegeboutjie kom skuur het en Anna, met die destydse ou logge geweer na hulle geskiet het, omdat hulle dalk haar woning kon kom omstoot; in Schalk en Anna se testament word die plase De Hoop en Wittenberg aan die 15de kind Roelof toegesê vir 'n vasgestelde prys, waarby 2 slawe en 'n ossewa met 10 osse ingesluit is. Die plaas Zachte Vallei is aan Gerrit bemaak, asook 'n slaaf en een ossewa met 10 osse. Aan Carel is kontant bemaak en 'n sekere slaaf Samson. On 5th June 1696 his parents, Willem Schalks and Elsie Jacobs Cloeten, deeded him a gift, to be considered part of their eventual estate, of :
eight oxen, used to the plough; four harijs; two vaarse of two years old; one plough, one wagon and one yoke; one horse with its accoutrements plus other farm utensils
These were to become his as soon as he married Anna Prevo, daughter of Scharl Prevo and Marij Lafreber.

His children are given as listed in the Inventory of her goods, drawn up on 10th October 1740, after the death of his widow, Anna Provo.
He also owned a farm called De Sagte Valleij in the Land of Waveren, which, in 1740, was run by his son Gerrit van der Merwe.
When he and his wife made their will in November 1739 he was ill and confined to bed ('Siekelijk te bedde leggend') and she was not well either.

The farm "de Hoop" in Klein Drakenstein was given to him in 1692 by governor Simon van der Stel. It was thus the second farm in the van der Merwe family (the first farm being "Kronendal" in Hout Bay). The Van der Merwe descendants lived on this farm for 130 years.
He was a renowned man, serving as member of the Heemraad of Stellenbosch as well as Drakenstein (Paarl).
A local burgher commando under leadership of himself and Jan Harmense Potgieter was formed to protect the local farmers from Hottentot attacks in the Land van Waveren. 23 volunteers joined this expedition.
