• Notes

  A1b1c2d5e1f2g4h10 Mary was born during the Anglo-Boer war. During that time the British were interning the Boer wives and children in concentration camps, burning their homes and destroying their crops and animals in an attempt to break the stubborn resistance of the Boer forces. The officer in charge of these operations in the Lichtenburg district was lieutenant-colonel C. G. C. Money. Mary's mother pleaded with Money to save her home and to allow her to give birth and raise her child on the farm and not in the camps where there was much hardship and where many perished. Colonel Money agreed to let her stay on condition that the child should be named after him, hence her third name, "Money". The colonel "adopted" the family by sending Christmas gifts to all the children each year until circa 1936/7, when he presumably passed away. (Research):She was born during the ABO and the officer in charge, colonel Money ordered that the house should not be burnt provided that the baby is named after him. She and the other children received Christmas gifts from the colonel until his death.
