  Arie van Wijk farmer (1713) of Stellenbosch born circa 1668, Amsterdam baptized 18 January 1668, Nieuwe Kerk, Amsterdam died circa 1713 buried circa 1713, Stellenbosch will dated 29 April 1713 Notes: In his will, dated 1713, he is described as having been born in Amsterdam and being 45 years old. In the Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam is recorded the baptism of 'Adrian, son of Roelof Adriaensz van Wijk and Trijntje Jans, 18th January 1668. (Amsterdam information kindly supplied by Bob Kernkamp). Since Roelof van Wijk and Trijntje Jans also lived at the Cape, I think we can safely assume that this baptism is his. Also in his will he is desribed as 'sick, confined to bed'. One can speculate that in this year of Smallpox plague that this is what he was suffering from - certainly he died in the same year. Staat om in den Egten staat te treeden' ) Cornelia Helmes circa 1676-1720 ------------------------ Kom in ongeveer 1677 saam met sy ouers in die Kaap aan. Voornaam ook as 'Arij/Ary/ Arije/Arye'. Burger van Stellenbosch. Met die opstel van sy testament te Stellenbosch in 1713 word sy ouderdom as 45 jaar aangegee. Sy naam verskyn as 'Arij van Wijk' in testament. Die volgende inskrywings verskyn in die Stellenbosse Doopregister: 19 Januarij 1698, gedoop Wijellum, ouers Aerrij van Wijck en Cornelija Hellem met getuies Wijellum van Wijck en trijentijen ijans. 29 November 1699, gedoop Sara, ouers Arij van Wijk en Cornelija Hel met getuies Fardinantus Appel en Ellijn Gildenhus. 4 Januarij 1705, gedoop Gerret, ouers Albert Immenes en Catrina van des Bos met getuies Arij van Wijck en Cornelia Helmes. 14 Desember 1707, gedoop Gerret, ouers Arij van Wijck en Kornelia Helmets met getuies Adam Tas en Elisabet van Brakel. 27 April 1710, gedoop Daniel, ouers Roeloff Jonasse en Barbara la Febre met getuie Arij van Wijck. 20 Julij 1710, gedoop Kartina, ouers Arij van Wijck en Cornelia Helmes met getuies Pieter van der Bijl en Hester ter Winkel --------------------- Philip van Wyck's research suggests that Roelof was the second son by that name born to Roelof Roelofsen VAN WIJCK and Susannetgen Jans, the older of the two boys, born on 1/1/1628, was assumed to have died in infancy. Johan van Deventer's text read, '. . . there are serious errors in the Van Wijck/Wijk/Wyk family tree. Roelof (not even mentioned in dV/P) is a1 and the father of Adrian (Arie) referred to as a2 in dV/P. It is more likely that Roelof and Willem were brothers with the same father but different mothers. Roelof (*abt ?1643? - in Holland), his wife Trijntje Jans (*abt 1637) and their son Arie van Wijck (~18/1/1655 in Amsterdam) came to SA about 1677. At the same time Willem van Wijck (*bef 1655) also arrived in SA. Now for the big mistake: Page 1154 dV/P about in the middle there is c8 Arie Willem ~2/11/1738 up to d5 Margaretha Johanna ~15/3/1795 just before b8 on p.1155; should be moved to p.1149 under b1c2 Gerrit ~30/9/1714, 3rd line from top. Then; c8 Arie Willem should change to be a2b1c2d1; this is thus the Willem a2 line . . .' What is entered here in this branch of the family reflects these suggested corrections. He married Cornelia HELM who was baptised on 17 September 1673 - she was the widow of Johannes van den Bosch. Cornelia later married Jacob Coetzer (look at entry under Coetzer as well).
