  Johannes Praetorius was baptised on October 26, 1642, by his father Wessel at Ouddorp. Wessel died while Johannes was still a theological student. Johannes discontinued his studies and joined the Dutch East India Company. Arrived on 1 Apr 1666 as midshipman but left shortly afterwards as sick-comforter, later as deputy governer of Mauritius. Returned permanently on 9 Dec 1669. In 1666, at the age of 23, he was "Second Person of Mauritius". It is not sure when he arrived at the Cape, but in 1669 he was already Orphan Master. Johannes(eers Joannes) Praetorius later Pretorius is die Stamvader van die Pretoriusse in Suid Afrika: Oudste seun van twee seuns en vyf dogters van Wesselius, gedoop 26 (of dalk 16) Okt 1642 te Ouddorp deur sy vader. Johannes was reeds student van teologie aan die Universiteit van Leidenmaar het sy studies laat vaar en een jaar na die dood van sy vader verlaat Johannes sy tuisland en arriveer 1 Apr 1666 as seekadet (adelbors)in diens van die H O I K aan die Kaap maar vertrek op 27 Jun dieselfde jaar na Mauritius as sieketrooster en later sekunde. Keer op 9 Des 1669 terug na Kaapstad waar hy in 1670 as assistent en later (1674) as Sekretaris van die weeskamer diens doen. Johannes trou op 18 Nov 1673 met Geertuijda Menthing (of Meyntjes) van Hasselt, Holland, (vandagBelgie) die weduwee van ene Dirk Bosch en slegs een seun , Wessel word uit die huwelik gebore voor haar afsterwe. Geen manlike nasate volg uit hierdie lyn nie. Johannes trou weer met Johanna Victor, van Amsterdam op 28 Feb 1677. Vyf kinders volg uit hierdie huwelik. Op 23 Des 1681 word sy aanstelling as Kommissaris van Huweliksake en van Brandweer bekragtig. Op 18 Des 1692 word hy verkies as Ouderling. Oorlede aan "verhoudheid (longontsteking?) gedurende die nag van 30 Apr 1694, aangeteken in die Dagregister van die Kommandeur van die Kaap, 'n buitengewone eer in daardie tyd. Johannes (A) se tweede seun uit sy tweede huwelik, Johannes (b3) was die grootvader van Kmd-Gnl Andries W J Pretorius en sy seun M W Pretorius, President van Transvaal. Comes back to the Cape permanently on 9 December 1669 and becomes the "stamvader" of the Pretorius family in South Africa. In 1674 he becomes the secretary of the "Weeskamer" (Orphan chamber).
