  'Vry swarte' volgens Paarl Museum. "First non-European to be granted land at the Cape" - Ian Neilson Stamvader v.d. Snymans in Suid-Afrika (sien Hoge se bydraes p. 129), boer "Sandvliet", Groot Drakenstein Farmed on "Sandvliet" in Groor Drakenstein; bought the farm Sandvliet in Groot Drakenstein in 1692. It stayed in possession of his widow, Marguerite de Savoye and her second husband Henning Viljoen, until it was sold out of her estate in 1735. Du Plooy.paf: Christoffel Snijman verw: a, trou voor 1 Jul 1690, Margaretha Theresia de Savoije, gebore 1671 , Gent, Vlaandere. Christoffel Snijman was die stamvader van die Snymans in Suid-Afrika. Sy van is ook Senayement gespel. (Senayment in die Drakensteinregister). Hy is deur sy voog, Paul Roux, dié van gegee het. Hy is dus die oorspronklike Snyman. Hy het voor 1689 na die Kaap gekom. Hy boer in 1692 in vennootskap met Ernst Friedrich Walter. 8.190 ?,Catharina *? 1631 + 1683 :-a slave woman from Paliacatta (i.e. Chief VOC settlement in Bengal - now known as Pulicat situated on the shores of Lake Pulicat on the Coromandel Coast of the Indian Sub-contient) born by 1631 and belonging (already by 1656) to the free woman Maria Magdalena (no surname) in Batavia (ie present-day Jakarta in Indonesia). On 8 October 1656 she was sexually assualted and grounded by her lover, the slave Claes van Malabar, in a stable at the Fort Rijswijck. Defending herself, she hit Claes with a ladder across his pelvis. His bladder burst and he died 4 days later. Convicted for murder and sentenced to death, she was pardoned, however, and her sentence to be garrotted was commutted and she was banished as a slave to the Cape of Good Hope for the rest of her natuarl life. She arrived in the Cape on 21 February 1657 on board the Prins Willem which was part of the return fleet that left Batavia on 4 December 1656. She has the important distinction of being the first recorded female slave convict at the Cape. She had 2 voorkinders, one by the ensign and chief of the garrison, Pieter Everaerts from Bruijsaert and one by the soldier Hans Christoffel Snijder (Netherlandised version of Schneider) alias Snijman, from Heidelberg in the Palatinate. She was also known as Groote Catrijn amd Catharina van Bengale. Hans Christoffel Snijman (also found as Christoffel Snijman) was a solder in the garrison convicted and banished to Robben Island on 30th July 1667 for not standing guard - instead he had been sleeping on a regular basis with Groote Catrijn - washerwoman at the Fort to successive commanders. Thereafter, Snijders disappears from the records at the Cape. On instructions from the Council of India, Groote Catrijn was again pardoned and permitted to marry a free black (mardijker) Antjonij (Jansz) (de Later) van Bengale on 20th December 1671. Groote Catrijn, her husband, her daughter and granddaughter - with the exception of Christoffel Snijman Jnr appear to have all died in some family tragedy sometime between December 1682 and February 1683. Antjonij Jansz van Bengale's sizeable estate provided for the boy's education and a substantial inheritance [50501] Farmed on "Sandvliet" in Groor Drakenstein; bought the farm Sandvliet in Groot Drakenstein in 1692. It stayed in possession of his widow, Marguerite de Savoye and her second husband Henning Viljoen, until it was sold out of her estate in 1735. Marguerite-Therese is nie met 'n Indiër getroud nie maar met 'n "halfslag"-Indiër. Die voorheen vermeende vaderskap van Christoffel Snyman berus op kwitansies waarin hy ontvangs erken "als universele erfgenaam (van) mijn vader Anthonie van Bengale" Volgens Mansell Upham (Capensis 3/97 pp. 8 ff.) was Christoffel Snijman die buite-egtelike kind van Catharina van Bengale/Palicatta ook bekend as Groote Catrijn, by die soldaat Hans Christoffel Snijman/Snijder/Schneider van Heidelberg. Christoffel is op 9 Maart 1669 gedoop, genoem na sy biologiese vader. Catrijn is op 20 Desember 1671 met Anthonie Jansz van Bengale, of "Vrye Swart Anthonie de Later van Bengale" getroud. Catrijn en Anthonie, 'n halfsuster, Petronella en lg. se dogter is almal teen die einde van 1682 oorlede, wat Christoffel as die enigste erfgenaam agterlaat, en dus die kwitansies verklaar. Ek het verwysings raakgeloop dat Christoffel Snijman (wat 'n pragtige handskrif gehad het) deur Paul Roux, die Hugenote-skoolmeester opgevoed is. (Dit sou kon verklaar hoe hy sy latere bruid ontmoet het.) Ek soek nog na dokumentêre bevestiging daarvoor. Kan iemand dalk help? Ek besit 'n kopie van die laaste kwitansie, gedateer 8 April 1691 asook 'n kopie van Anthonie se handtekening/merk indien iemand sou belangstel. Ockert Malan Christoffel SNIJMAN was gedoop 9 Maart 1669, sy vader was Hans Christoffel Snijman 'n soldaat by die Kaap. Sy vader het 'n skelm verhouding gehad met die slaafin Catharina van Bengale, sy was ook bekend as Groote Catrijn (Kyk ook onder haar inskrywing). Sy vader is toe na Robben eiland gestuur op die 30 Julie 1667. Christoffel se moeder was hierdie Catharina van Bengale. In 'n brief van die owerheid 6 Januarie 1672 word daar melding gemaak dat Groot Catrijn vrygestel was. Sy moeder trou later met die vryswarte Anthony (Jansz) (de Later) van Bengale, wat toe sy stiefvader was. Baie mense maak die fout om te dink dat sy stiefvader sy vader was. Daar moes 'n tragedie plaas gevind het want die hele familie is ewe skielik oorlede tussen Desember 1682 en Februarie 1683, behalwe Christoffel. Christoffel was een van die min manlike halfslag slawe wat in die witgemeenskap ingetrou het. Christoffel trou in Julie 1689 met Margaretha Therese DE SAVOYE sy was van Gent, Vlaandere. Haar ouers was Jacques de Savoije en Marie Madeleine de Klerk. Margaretha het in 1688 saam met haar ouers na die Kaap gekom, sy was toe 17 jaar oud, hulle was Hugenote vlugtelinge en het op die skip Oosterland aangekom.
