  At his Christening he is recorded as 'Gerret' with parents 'Arij Van WIJCK & Kornelia HELMETS' with witnesses Adam TAS and Elisabet VAN BRAKEL. Will dated 27 March 1731 and filed 8 January 1738 Burger Drakenstein This licence was issued by the Governor to 'Gerrit VAN WIJK, Arij zoon' in respect of a property described as '..agter den Picquet bergen over de Oliphants rivier ge'n de Matjes Fonteijn...' There were four endorsements to this licence, the last one dated 30/4/1766. The boundaries of the Drakenstein district were far flung at the time. He would seem to have been working as a farmhand (knegt) for Willem Basson on the latter's property in Cape Town between 1711 and 1713. (1)(2) Details of his family come from the Inventory taken in 1730 after the death of his first wife, Elizabeth Vivier, the joint will he made with his second wife, Maria Provo (1731) and the will she made before her marriage to Gerrit van Schalkwyk (1740). The farm, Vaderlandse Rietkloof, was sold in 1730 at the settling up of the estate of Elisabeth Vivier. I don't know if Gerrit bought it in himself or not. 1. Muster Rolls VC49, p.240,1711 2.
