- Lourens was a burger van Drakenstein. He was a corporal in the dragonders (1730-1740).
Later he became a farmer. He farmed near Ceres in the Cape where he produced vegetables, fruit, mutton, wool, grain, wine, brandy and nuts.
He farmed on his mother-in-law's (Louisa Cordier) farm "Wildebeestkuil" or "Geelblomsvlei" (today in the Suider Paarl area), as well as his own loan farms "Uitkomst" (in the present day Ceres district near Karoopoort in the Agter Bokkeveld) and "Beerenfontein" (in the Roggeveld above Kamsberg, the present day district of Sutherland south of town); both these towns were then part of the Drakenstein district.
According to SA Genealogies he also had a voorkind with Catharina Hoffman, presumably a slave.
