Notes |
- Maria was born in the Netherlands before her father came to the Cape. She herself arrived in the Cape with her mother in 1662.
While her husband Willemsz was serving sentence for murder on Robben Island, she had an affair with Ockert Cornelisz Olivier (one of his employees). From this affair she had 2 illigitimate children (Dina and Cornelis) between 1672 and 1675.
When her husband discovered his wife's unfaithfulness he took her to court. This lawsuit and the relationship between them was so bad that they were banned to Batavia in 1676 on 2 seperate ships. But before the ships set sail they were reconciled and departed on the same ship, the "Vrije Zee". Dina and Cornelis were not recorded as illegitimate children because Willem had forgiven Maria, and they were placed in the care of their grandfather, Jan Coenraad Visser - Ockert Olivier was made responsible for their upkeep.
After returning from Batavia they were sent to Mauritius, where Willem later died. Maria remarried on the island and returned with her children and new husband to the Cape.
Hierdie twee kinders was opgevoed deur Maria se vader Jan Coenraad Visser. Maria is oorlede omtrent 7 Junie 1718.
