- Hugo Vogel studied painting from Gebhardt und Wilhelm Sohn in Dusseldorf and also from Lefebre in Paris.
He travelled in Italy and the Netherlands for study puposes.
In later times he became very well known fo his portrait of the General Field Marshal and state President von Hindenburg.
During 1887-92 he was professor at the Academic University for Graphic Arts in Berlin. He was doctor honoris causa, fellow of the Prussian academy of the arts and holder of several golden medals.
His paintings "The great Prince-Elector receives Frenchrefugees' (1885), "Reception of the French Fugitives", and " The Councils of Berlin and Kolln take communion in both kinds" (both in the Berlin city hall) are especially well known
