- Phillipe was the progenitor (stamvader) of the Fouché family in South Africa. He was a French Huguenot from Orléanais. He grew up on the farm "La Brusleé", near Suévres (near Ménars in the Loire Valley in France). After his wedding he lived on the farm "La Luandiere" in the assembly or community of Saint-Lubin de Su
eves.
He left for the Cape on the ship "Voorschotten" with his wife, Anne, and 3 children: Anne (6) Esther (5) and Jacques (3). His 2 eldest children (both named Phillipe) had already died at a young age in Europe. The "Voorschotten" was the first ship to leave Holland with French refugees. It was a flyboat with 3 masts and a rounded hull, 130 Dutch feet long and capable of carrying 150 people. Its captain was Fs. Vellerius (Valerius). It was part of the autumnal fleet - sailing with this ship were "Borssenburg", "Oosterland", "De Schelde", "Berg China", "Zuid-Beveland" and "Wapen van Alkmaar". It set sail from Delftshaven, Zeeland in the Netherlands on 31 Dec 1687. On 13 April 1688 it arrived at Saldanha Bay, where its passengers transferred to the ship "Jupiter", which arrived at Table Bay on 26 April 1688 with 192 people on board.
In 1692 he settled on the farm "De Wildepaardenjacht" east of the Berg River in Drakenstein, in 1699. [5]
