• Notes

  Barend was the progenitor (stamvader) of the Burger family in South Africa. He was from Burcherdt - the independant port city of Lübeck in West Germany. He arrived in the Cape before 1690 and became a burgher in 1691. In 1693 he was living in Drakenstein and later became the Captain of its "Burgher Dragonders". He worked as a smith from 1688 to 1704. From 1699 to 1700 he was a member of the Heemraad. He bought the farm "Landskroon" in Paarl in 1697. This farm was owned by Gottfried Meyhuizen, but his farm was repossessed because he mistreated a slave. In 1699 he also acquired the farm "Leeuwenjagt" in Paarl. Janet's notes, '...van Lubeck, Duitsland; 1691 burger en smid; 1693 woon in Drakenstein, later kaptein v.d. burger-dragonders; ontvang in 1692 die plaas Leeuwenjacht, Agter-Paarl...'
