- Familia 1966 No 3 page 2:
The following are extracts from an article compiled by Philip van Wyk, an Anerican descendant of Cornelis Barentse van Wyck By Duurstede. He had made a study of the history of the home town of the van Wycks, and became interested in the van Wycks who came to South Africa. These extracts are made from a copy which he gave to Mr. Appie van Wyk of Bellville and has been made available for publication in Familia by Mrs A H v.d. Linden of Pinelands.
While it has been well known for many years that the van Wyck family in Americaa considered Wijck bij Duurstede as their place of family origin in the Netherlands, although the scientific substantiation of this has only recently been set forth, there has been very little known or published about the even more numerous Van Wyck family long established in South Africa. As with the American branch using that term in a general sense, the records of the Van Wycks who have pioneered in newlands across the seas would appear to be quite accurate in their countries of settlement, but the data linking the places of their orgin in the Netherlands of the South African Van Wyks appeared sketchy. A study of existing South African genealogies, particularly those by Coetzee de Villiers, Cape Town 1893, Dr. D. du Toit Malherbe, Stellenbosch 1859, and J. B. Redelinghuys, Cape Town 1955, indicate that all of the Van Wyk name from Dutch colonial extraction in South Africa originate with two individuals, Willem and Arie, who are claimed to be brothers. The historian Theal, who has written the standard account of the founding of South Africa, mentions these settlers Willem and Arie (Adriaan) Van Wyk, but does not give their place of origin in the Netherlands. De Villiers states that although both Willem and Arie arrived at the Cape settlement in 1677, that Willem was born in Ingen (which is a small village in the Neder Betuwe), while Arie came from Netherland. For a time it was considered that as Willem and Arie were said to be brothers, that Arie as well as Willem was born at Ingen and only sailed from Amsterdam. De Villiers also mentions a third brother Roelof who left no descendants. Willem van Wijk settled in Stellenbosch, married Catharina Hillebrants and left a family of two children. Some Van Wyks in South Africa descend from him but the majority are descended from Arie who also settled in Stellenbosch, married Cornelia Helmes and left a family of nine children.
Ingen in the Betuwe is a village within the general market town area of Wijck bij Duurstede by ferry across the Lek. It is one of a half dozen such villages including Xersteren, Lienden, Ommeren, Eck en Wiel, Muric, Rijswijk, Ravenswaaij and Asch as well as the towns of Culemburg and Rhenen whose archives ?

Philip van Wyck's research suggests that Roelof was the second son by that name born to Roelof Roelofsen VAN WIJCK and Susannetgen Jans, the older of the two boys, born on 1/1/1628, was assumed to have died in infancy. Johan van Deventer's text read, '. . . there are serious errors in the Van Wijck/Wijk/Wyk family tree. Roelof (not even mentioned in dV/P) is a1 and the father of Adrian (Arie) referred to as a2 in dV/P. It is more likely that Roelof and Willem were brothers with the same father but different mothers. Roelof (*abt ?1643? - in Holland), his wife Trijntje Jans (*abt 1637) and their son Arie van Wijck (~18/1/1655 in Amsterdam) came to SA about 1677. At the same time Willem van Wijck (*bef 1655) also arrived in SA. Now for the big mistake: Page 1154 dV/P about in the middle there is c8 Arie Willem ~2/11/1738 up to d5 Margaretha Johanna ~15/3/1795 just before b8 on p.1155; should be moved to p.1149 under b1c2 Gerrit ~30/9/1714, 3rd line from top. Then; c8 Arie Willem should change to be a2b1c2d1; this is thus the Willem a2 line . . .'What is entered here in this branch of the family reflects these suggested corrections.
