Richard Greeff studied medicine in Berlin, became medical doctor and assistant doctor in the City Hospital of Danzig, 1859-1862 practicing doctor in Elberfield. He studied zoology and in 1863 he registered in Bonn to teach zoology and comparative anatomy.
On 26 April 1871 he became extraordinary Professor and Director of the Zoological Institute ofthe University of Marburg.
Since 1888 he was ordinary professor of zoology and comparative anatomy. In 1889/90 he was rector of the University of Marburg. On 13 September 1891 he was named Privy councilor. He was president of the Society for the Promotion of Natural Sciences in Marburg.
