    STAMVADER
    Gerrit WILLEMSE

    Gerrit Willems het in 1690 na die Kaap gekom in die tyd toe Simon van der Stel goewerneur was . Dit is 3-jaar na die aankoms van die Franse Huggenote in 1688. In 1685 het die direkteure van die Hollandse Oos-Indiese Kompanjie, aan wie die Kaap toe behoort het, besluit om hulle landbou produksie in die Kaap te privatiseer en aan die vryburgers oor te laat. Ingevolge hierdie besluit het hulle 'n gratis skeepsreis en 'n stuk grond aan Europeërs toegeken wat na die Kaap wou immigreer. Dit het die 260 Europeërs, wat Jan van Riebeeck in die Kaap agter gelaat het en die 156 Huggenote wat in 1688 aangekom het, se getalle vinnig laat vermeerder. Op daardie stadium was die Huggenote en die Duitsers aan die Kaap meer as die Hollanders, desnieteenstaande het goewerneur Simon van der Stel Hollands as die amptelike taal behou. Hierdie Kapenaars het hulle vir die eerste keer as Afrikaners begin beskou en hulself onderskei van die Europeërs wat in diens van die Hollands Oos-Indiese-Kompanjie was.

    Gerrit Willems was heel waarskynlik een van hierdie vroeë landbouers wat ingevolge die gratis skeepsreis en stuk grond na Suid-Afrika gekom het. (Grond wat hulle toegeken het was spesifiek in die Stellenbosch omgewing.) Hierdie Vryburgers "Afrikaners" of Boere, soos hulle hulle reeds in Hollands self genoem het, was gou ontevrede met die streng beheermaatreëls van die Kaapse Regering m.b.t. hulle landbouproduksie en aktiwiteite. Reeds hier het die Afrikaners se stryd om vryheid en selfbeskikking begin. Gou het hulle, ondanks alle wette om hulle te verhinder, begin om Ooswaarts te trek en in regeringskringe as trekboere bekend gestaan. Teen 1750 was daar reeds ongeveer 1000 van hierdie trekboere in die distrikte Swellendam, Graaff-Reinet en Uitenhage. Van hierdie trekboere in die distrikte Swellendam en Graaff-Reinet skryf die Kaapse Regering aan die einde van die 1700's die volgende:

    'Die boere in die grens distrikte het a.g.v. die afgesonderdheid vanaf die Kaap en die eentonige lewe van veeboere, asook die gebrek aan interaksie met beskaafde individue, afvallig begin raak van die Kaapse Regering. Hulle het hulleself nie ondergeskik aan die wette van die Kaapse Regering beskou nie en was oorgelaat aan hulle eie inisiatief. Hulle het aangepas deur dinge in hulle eie hande te neem. Hulle het hulle eie paaie en skole gebou en hulle self beskerm teen aanvalle van die inboorlinge wanneer die regering nie aan hulle probleme aandag kon gee nie.'

    Ons stamvader was ene GERRIT WILLEMS, van Leeuwarden, in Friesland, Noord-Nederland. Sy beroep word aangegee as Kalkbrander en Veeboer. As jong man in sy 20tiger jare, verlaat hy sy familie in Nederland en vertrek met 'n skip na die suidpunt van Afrika. In 1690 arriveer hy aan die Kaap en trou op 9 April 1691, in Kaapstad, met Maria Cornelisse (sy word Maria van Bengale genoem in die lys van vryburgers van 1695). Maria Cornelisse is die dogter van Willem Cornelissen en Maria van Bengale. (Volgens inligting was Maria van Bengale 'n slavin van Jan van Riebeeck.)

    Gerrit Willems gaan in 1716 'n tweede huwelik aan met Johanna (genoem Anna) van Wyk, dogter van Willem van Wyk en Catharina Hildebrandt.

    GERRIT WILLEMS IN STELLENBOSCH:

    Die eerste Vryswartes van Stellenbosch 1670-1720, deur Prof. J.L. Hattingh

    'n Ander vryswart, ISAAC PIETERSZ, was in 1713 aangekla van "diverse quaataardigheeden en . . . het steelen van wijn". Dit is eintlik eersgenoemde klag wat in die geval ons aandag verg.

    Tydens die hofsaak is daar ook heelwat gesinspeel op Isaac Pietersz se opvoeding en karaktert rekke. So is daar genoem dat hy as kind, "sijnde een swart jongh", deur die vrou van die burger Matthjis Diedriks aangeneem, opgepas en opgevoed is. Vir nege jaar sou sy probeer om hom goeie deugde aan te leer, maar hy het hulle huishouding verlaat om te "vagebondeeren". Toe reeds was hy, volgens Diedriks, ongehoorsaam en kon hy "met reg 'n deugniet" genoem word.

    Vir 'n tydlank het Isaac Pietersz sy intrek by GERRIT WILLEMSZ van Leeuwarden geneem. Die laaste vier jaar daarvan, het laasgenoemde getuig, het Isaac Pietersz hom in sy eie huis "aangesteld als meester en voogt, 't geen . . . hem ondragelijk geweest te zijn". Op 'n keer het Pietersz hom selfs aan die hare uit sy eie huis gesleep en toe sy vrou oorgeneem, met wie hy in elk geval "seer groote familiaritijt" gehad het. Uit hierdie verhouding is toe "twee onegte Bruijne kinderen" gebore. As gevolg van hierdie uitsmytery moes Gerrit Willemsz van Leeuwaarden sedertdien rondswerf om sy lewensonderhoud by ander koloniste te gaan soek.

    Ook Andries Voormeester, 'n man van hoë ouderdom, het verklaar hoe Isaac Pietersz hom eenkeer gegryp en in die vuur gegooi het, net omdat hy nie wyn aan hom wou gee nie. .. Dit was eers nadat hy wyn by die landbouer Richardus Adolphus probeer steel het, dat hulle hom onder die bed van die vrou van Gerrit Willemsz van Leeuwaarden gevind het."

    In die daaropvolgende ondervraging deur landdros Nicolaas van der Heuvel het Pietersz te kenne gegee dat hy reeds 29 jaar oud was en dat hy as kind vrygestel is by die afsterwe van Leendert van Gijselen. Willemsz se vrou, by wie Isaac twee "bruin" kinders gehad het, was dus nie ook swart nie.

    Uit Gerrit se eerste huwelik met Maria Cornelisse word 10 kinders gebore en almal in Stellenbosch gedoop. Op 14 Junie 1711, doop hulle hul seun MATTHEUS WILLEMSE. (Mattheus het sy oorsprong in Hebreeus beteken 'geskenk van God')

    Mattheus Willemse trou op 13 Februarie 1735, met JOHANNA VAN WIELLIGH, gedoop 3 Mei 1716, dogter van Nicolaus von Wielligh en Elisabeth van Wyk. Nicolaus von Wielligh is afkomstig van Hamburg in Duitsland, het as soldaat na Suid-Afrika gekom en later 'n burger geword. Sy dogter Johanna was die vyfde kind van nege.

    Mattheus was 24- en Johanna 19-jaar oud toe hulle in 1735 in Stellenbosch getroud is. Hulle moes nog in die Kaapstad/Stellenbosch omgewing gewoon het, want in daardie stadium was dit die enigste twee dorpe wat bestaan het. Uit hierdie huwelik word 14 kinders gebore, waaronder 6 seuns, waaruit die grootste nageslag Willemse-in Suid-Afrika van vandag gebore word.

    Aangehaal uit "Slaves and Free Blacks at the Cape"

    Another case which came before the Council of Justice was that in which the slave Mary from Bengal was involved. She belonged to Jan van Riebeeck and, like many of the other slaves, she lived in the Fort. All the members of the settlement at the Cape lived in the Fort with the exception of the chief gardener and his slaves. Van Riebeeck must have noticed that Willem Cornelis, a constable whose room was near the magazine where the gunpowder was stored, was often seen in the company of Mary, for on Sunday night, the 22nd of August 1660 van Riebeeck, and three witnesses, surprised Mary and Willem Cornelis in each other's arms between 10 and 11 at night. The next day the witnesses, the surveyor Pieter Potter, the sergeant, Jan Danckaert, and a mason, Francois de Coninck, testified before the members of the Council that they had found Mary and Willem Cornelis in bed together and that van Riebeeck had sent the slave back to her room and had taken Willem Cornelis into custody and was now lodging this complaint against him. As Cornelis had broken the rules of the artikelbrief and transgressed the Statutes of India, the fiscal demanded a fine of 100 reals and imposed a sentence of 50 years "ad opus publicum". This sentence was commuted to a fine of 50 reals and dismissal from his post as constable.
