On 5th June 1696 his parents, Willem Schalks and Elsie Jacobs Cloeten, deeded him a gift, to be considered part of their eventual estate, of :
eight oxen, used to the plough; four harijs; two vaarse of two years old; one plough, one wagon and one yoke; one horse with its accoutrements plus other farm utensils
These were to become his as soon as he married Anna Prevo, daughter of Scharl Prevo and Marij Lafreber.

His children are given as listed in the Inventory of her goods, drawn up on 10th October 1740, after the death of his widow, Anna Provo.
He also owned a farm called De Sagte Valleij in the Land of Waveren, which, in 1740, was run by his son Gerrit van der Merwe.
When he and his wife made their will in November 1739 he was ill and confined to bed ('Siekelijk te bedde leggend') and she was not well either.

The farm "de Hoop" in Klein Drakenstein was given to him in 1692 by governor Simon van der Stel. It was thus the second farm in the van der Merwe family (the first farm being "Kronendal" in Hout Bay). The Van der Merwe descendants lived on this farm for 130 years.
He was a renowned man, serving as member of the Heemraad of Stellenbosch as well as Drakenstein (Paarl).
A local burgher commando under leadership of himself and Jan Harmense Potgieter was formed to protect the local farmers from Hottentot attacks in the Land van Waveren. 23 volunteers joined this expedition.

Schoolmaster Pieter Paulus Tame assisted Aletta after the death of Claas with delivering the required three trek cattle to the company farm "Groene cloof" on 31 Jan 1729.
Aletta was not literate like her husband, Claas - she signed their joint will with a cross.

Sy nageslag se familienaam het by sy kleinkinders uitgesterf.


Hy koop 2 maande na sy huwelik met Catharina Cloete beide plase Overveen en Bloemendal op 27 Aug 1717 van Maartin van Staden. In 1737 koop hy ook sy vader se ou plaas Kunnenberg en besit dus in totaal 180 morg. Hiervan dra hy in 1747 'n deel oor aan sy skoonseun Albertus Myburgh. Op 23 Nov 1744 is hy op aanbeveling van die Landros
en Heemrade van Stellenbosch benoem tot Heemraad van Drakenstein. Die heemraadskap was 'n erebetrekking onder voorsitterskap van die Landros. Hulle het uitspraak gedoen in kleinere siviele geskille en verder beheer gehad oor wee, brue, water- verdeling ens. Hy was ook luitenant van die Burger-Kavallery van Stellenbosch. In 1753, is hy van hierdie betrekking onthef op eie versoek, omdat hy " zeer hewig van de jigt gequelt werde, zig
daaronder buyten stat bevind omme gemelde Dienste langer naar behooren te kunnen waarnemen." Hy was landbouer van beroep op Bloemendal as hoofwoonplaas en Overveen en Het Schilpad. In 1754 is hy bereid om Rds. 100 te betaal vir sy leenplaas Klaas Voogtsrivier aan Cogmans Kloof. Met sy dood in 1762 was daar twee oorlewende kinders uit sy tweede huwelik met Aletta Keyser en drie uit sy derde huwelik. Sy weduwee Maria Fick oorleef ook 'n tweede huwelik met Arend Blyenberg en na haar dood erf haar seun Jacob in 1792 die oorblywende deel teen betaling van 14 000 gulde.

In her will dated 1747, she expressed her wish that her farm on the Vier en Twintig Rivieren, called 'Houd Constant', should pass after her own death, to her daughter, Maria Magdalena, wife of the farmer, Willem Burger.

Carel was the seventeenth and last child born to Schalk and Anna. The first of them (Elizabeth) had been born in 1697. Janet Melville's notes included the following excerpt on Carel, '...sy moeder, Anna Prevot, bemaak na haar man se dood 700 gulden aan haar jongste seun Carel, 'wegens lyfs indisposistie'; hy verkry in 1748 die plaas Patatskloof in die Wamakersvallei van Marie Mouy, weduwee van Francois Retief. Hierdie plaas is tot vandag toe nog in familiebesit; sy weduwee het op 3.12.1784 voor H.L. Bletterman, geswore clerk te Casteel de Goede Hoop, die volgende nalatings gedoen. It would also appear (Janet Melville) that d.˜wegens lyfs indisposistie' his widowed mother, Anne (née Prevot), had left him seven hundred Dutch guilders she had inherited from the estate of her late husband Schalk, and that in 1748 Carel had bought from the widow of Francois Retief the farm Pattattacloeff (today's Patatskloof) in Wagenmakersvallei (today's Wellington). Carel's widow inherited the farm, and in a 1784 will left it, upon payment of four thousand guilders, to her eldest son, Willem Carel. This son, also Johannes Jacobus and Anna Susanna were each left a slave. The three youngest children, Izaak, Roelof and Petrus received from the estate certain bequests, though as yet undiscovered by me. Louisa isn't mentioned.

It would also appear (Janet Melville) that d.˜wegens lyfs indisposistie' his widowed mother, Anne (née Prevot), had left him seven hundred Dutch guilders she had inherited from the estate of her late husband Schalk, and that in 1748 Carel had bought from the widow of Francois Retief the farm Pattattacloeff (today's Patatskloof) in Wagenmakersvallei (today's Wellington). Carel's widow inherited the farm, and in a 1784 will left it, upon payment of four thousand guilders, to her eldest son, Willem Carel. This son, also Johannes Jacobus and Anna Susanna were each left a slave. The three youngest children, Izaak, Roelof and Petrus received from the estate certain bequests, though as yet undiscovered by me. Louisa isn't mentioned.

Johannes was the eldest child born to Claas and Aletta Jansz van Rensburg. He was baptised in the Stellenbosch church on 7 July 1709. The witnesses at this rite of passage was not one of the van der Merwe family members, rather they were Gerrit and Johanna (nee Rynick) Basson . Refer to the article on Claas Jansz for speculation on their connection. Johannes was not the eldest child in the household, since Alleta had two surviving children from her first marr iage to Marthinus van Staden, namely Marthinus and Maria van Staden.

Johannes was twenty one years old when his mother passed away on 30 September 1729. With the death of both his parents, the Weeskamer made him the custodian of his brothers Willem and Claas. His half brother Marthinus van Staden was married to Catharina Botha. She had a younger sister Anna Margaretha Botha who became the wife of Johannes on 27 August 1730, the ceremony was conducted at the church at Cape Town. These Botha girls grandfather Christoffel Snyman was the son of the freed slave Antonij van Bengale => Christoffel Snyman => Elsie Snyman = > Anna Margaretha Botha. They had five sons and the book Rietvleiers gives an account of each of these sons: Nicolaas, Jacobus, Johannes Frederik. Hendrik Christoffel, Marthinus Philipp us.

Johannes obtained on 21 October 1732 the loan farm Twee Kuylen (this is in the Eastern Cape near Valsrivier, today it is just north of the town Albertinia) which use to belong to his half brother Marthinus van Staden. This farm would eventually go to his son Marthinus Philippus . Johannes also obtained the loan farm Valsche Rivier, this farm he made to his son Nicolaas in 1765. Johannes also obtained the loan farm Middeldrift in 1756, this farm also known as Hartebeestekraal was left in Johannes' will to his son Johannes Frederik. His wife Anna Margaretha Botha passed away on 1 October 1765 according to the church records. Johannes died in the mid seventeen seventies.

Burger Drakenstein. He started the branch of the Van Rensburg family which settled in the Cold Bokkeveld, Ceres ditrict. His parents possessed a number of loan farms, the first being Hottentotsfontein at Riebeecks Casteel in 1709. At the age of twelve Willem was orpaned. He owned 7 cattle, 2 horses and 13 sheep according to inventaris. The loan farms Rensburg, Calaas Voogds River and Zeekoeigat (on the Groot Berg River, 9 km north of Wellington) belonged to the family then. Willem and his brother Nicolaas were raised by their eldest brother Johannes . (Evidence suggested on the farm Twee Kuilen on the Valse River). The other children were raised by Frans Smit who was married to their half-sister Maria. Twelve children were born in this family (Pama-de Villiers). In 1803 H. Lichtenstein accompanied General de Mist's traveling party. They stopped at the farm Leeukuil and were
entertained for lunch by the widow of Willem. The family had a deaf and dumb son and daughter who were both nearly thirty. The guests were impressed how well the family communicated with them and how the disability did not hinder their contribution in the house and with husbandry. (The farm Leeukuil receives attention by H. Fransen and M. Cook in The Old Houses of the Cape.) Much work remains to determine the contribution of this part of the family.

Willem became a member of the Drakenstein church 5 October 1738. Willem possesed in 1741: 5 horses, 40 cattle, 150 sheep, 3 slaves and 3 weapons. He served in the commando as dragooner.
