Carel was the seventeenth and last child born to Schalk and Anna. The first of them (Elizabeth) had been born in 1697. Janet Melville's notes included the following excerpt on Carel, '...sy moeder, Anna Prevot, bemaak na haar man se dood 700 gulden aan haar jongste seun Carel, 'wegens lyfs indisposistie'; hy verkry in 1748 die plaas Patatskloof in die Wamakersvallei van Marie Mouy, weduwee van Francois Retief. Hierdie plaas is tot vandag toe nog in familiebesit; sy weduwee het op 3.12.1784 voor H.L. Bletterman, geswore clerk te Casteel de Goede Hoop, die volgende nalatings gedoen. Aan haar oudste seun Willem Carel, die woonplaas 'Pattattacloeff' geleë in Wagenmakersvallei vir 4,000 gulden, aan Willem Carel, Johannes Jacobus en Anna Susanna elk 'n slaaf en as verdere erfgename word genoem Izaak, Roelof en Petrus. [11218] × 08.10.1747 Paarl....'

It would also appear (Janet Melville) that d.˜wegens lyfs indisposistie' his widowed mother, Anne (née Prevot), had left him seven hundred Dutch guilders she had inherited from the estate of her late husband Schalk, and that in 1748 Carel had bought from the widow of Francois Retief the farm Pattattacloeff (today's Patatskloof) in Wagenmakersvallei (today's Wellington). Carel's widow inherited the farm, and in a 1784 will left it, upon payment of four thousand guilders, to her eldest son, Willem Carel. This son, also Johannes Jacobus and Anna Susanna were each left a slave. The three youngest children, Izaak, Roelof and Petrus received from the estate certain bequests, though as yet undiscovered by me. Louisa isn't mentioned.

Carel married Francina PIENAAR, b2c6 on 8 Oct 1747 in Paarl, Cape, South Africa. Francina (daughter of PIENAAR and Louisa CORDIER, b3, daughter of Jacques PIENAAR, b2 and Louisa CORDIER, b3) was born before 4 Mar 1725; was christened on 4 Mar 1725; died in 1771 in Cape, South Africa.
