The firm "Ehrenberg & Leuschner" was aquired by Joh. Peter Greeff (Bornefeld) in 1829 and promptly reanmed "J.P.Greeff, G.W. Sohn"
Apparently it was the son of Joh. Peter Greeff(Bredt) who brought tribute to his father in this way.


Johann Peter was a businessman in Elberfield on the Aue, but moved to Barmen in 1829.

In the reformed parish of Elberfield he was Scholarch for a period.
At his death in 1837 Joh. Peter Greeff left behind a flourishing factory.

Johann married Clara Wilhelmine BORNEFELD on 12 Jan 1802. Clara (daughter of Johann Daniel BORNEFELD and Christine MORIAN) was born in 1784; died in 12 June1860. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

The firm "Ehrenberg & Leuschner" was aquired by Joh. Peter Greeff (Bornefeld) in 1829 and promptly renamed "J.P. Greeff & G.W. Sohn".Apparently it was the son Joh. Peter Greeff (Bredt) who brought tribute to his father in this way. He was a member of the Concordia Society in Barmen in 1824 and must accordingly already have lived in Barmen at the time.

According to notes made by Joh. Peter in Dusseldorf the firm also produced other articles which were in demand in the market, e.g. snuff boxes, brooches, cuff links, tie pins, also brooches carved from horn and similar material.
The main thrust thoughout was the metal button manufacture which had gradually conquered the whole German market and was more and more supplanting the French articles in foreign markets.
The largest manufacturing centres were Barmen and Ludenscheid.

Joh married Sophie Emilie BREDT on 24 Nov 1827. Sophie (daughter of Joh. Peter BREDT and Charlotte SIEBEL) was born on 21 May 1806; died on 22 Mar 1863. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

The younger son Carl wanted to go to the West Indies in service of the Rhenish West Indian company but gave up this plan and became representitive of the frim "J.P.Greeff & Sohn".
After the death of the father Eduard and Carl took over the business, but as a purely metal button factory; nothing further was heard of the other manufactured articles. The factory buildings were close to the Old Market on the Wupper, on the present Gemarke shore.
The offices were in the Old Market in an annex beside the old Wichelhausen house.
King Friedrich Wilhelm inspected the factory on 27 Aug 1842 and bestowed the Order of the Red Eagle IV on Karl Greeff.
Later he named him Royal Trade Councillor.

Carl was the owner of the firm "J. P. Greeff, G. W. Sohn" in Barmen, Royal Trade Councillor and Knight of the Order of the Red Eagle.

In 1845 and 1855 he was elected Churchmaster of the Reformed parish Gemarke. In 1833 he joined the Concordia Company and became its director in 1859/60

Carl Greeff lived in the old Bergische house at the corner of Clever and Bollwerk streets, in the picture "Clever Bollwerk" at a. He built a new house in the garden of this house in 1883 at b., where his son Rudolf later lived.
First his son-in-law Cramer and then his daughter Pauline moved into the old house.
The houses remained connected through the garden. On the other side of the river Wupper lay his factory.

For their descendants see the branch Greeff- Ritterhaus.

Carl married Wilhelmine RITTERSHAUS on 7 May 1840. Wilhelmine (daughter of Joh. Abraham RITTERSHAUS and Wilhelmine WILKHAUS) was born on 30 Apr 1811 in Barmen; died on 2 Nov 1864. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Uncle Eduard owned a beautiful house in Werth near the Karlsplatz, in which he lived with "Aunt Julchen" his sister Julie. Both went to much trouble to keep the family together and arranged regular family days.
Coffee was served in the Bergische tradition and supper. Immediately afterwrds the sexes were strictly segregated. Only now and then young cousins of opposite sexes would dare to exchange a few words by leaning against the doorframes of their respective rooms.
After the death of his sister Eduard still invited the family to a large Christmas feast, having decorated the room with the help of his coachman.

Valuable ornaments and books were handed out as gifts, including the the little pointed collars that were the rage at the time. Female relatives in financial embarassment received the required coinage.

Until his marriage Robert lived in Barmen and then moved to Koln where he and his brother Richad jointly started the firm dealing in Barmen trimming and edging articles. Later the couple moved to Frankfurt am Main, where he made contact with his relative Ernst Greeff-Bettelhauser and the opera singer Paul Greeff.
Laura Greeff was very interested in Language and literature. She was fond of recounting that in her youth she had attended the session of the German National Assembly in the Church of st. Paul.
After the death of her husband she moved to Weimar with the family of her son Edward.

Robert married Laura ANDRE on 20 Dec 1849 in Hanau. Laura (daughter of Chief Forester ANDRE) was born in 8 December1825 in Dusseldorf; died on 17 May 1909 in Weimar. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Richard Was associated with his brother Robert in Koln.

Shortly after his marriage he established his own firm "Greeff-Bredt& Comp." In Barmen.Presumably with the help of his very affuent father-in-law.
This was a factory producing cloth covered buttons, something completely new at the time.
Later a weaving mill was added to produce the materials for the buttons. Other materials were also made there, especially "Lasting".
The offices and despatch rooms were in the back building on 7 Reformed Church street, the weaving mill was in Gas street.

He and his brother Ernst served on year in the infantry in Koln.
The elsdest son Joh Peter was at most invovled in purchses and the first establisment of the firm.

Notes:

Joh. Peter Greeff-Bredt went to America with his son Ernst in 1858 and established the firm "Greeff & Comp" in Hoboken. Since Ernst remained in America while his father had to return to his business in Barmen, Ernst must be regarded as the actual founder of "Greeff & Comp".
He took Greeff - Bredt & Comp to Toronto with his son, Hermann. He wrote poetry, an example is on p 65 of J V Bredt (1941).

In 1870 he acquired the property Mallack on the northern slope of Barmen.
In 1874 he was elected Churchmaster of the Reformed parish Gemarke.
He was also secretary of the poorhouse of the parish and it was mainly due to his efforts that a new building was erected in 1882 above the cemetry in Klingeholl.(According to Werth-Lauffs: History of the Evangelic-Reformed congregation Bramen Gemarke,p.347)

The street running past the cemetry was named Hugo street after him.
In 1905 he gave up his share in the firm "Greef-Bredt & Comp" and moved to his son Hermann in Toronto.

The following poem by Hugo Greeff proves his great gift for poetry. To date it has been impossible to ascertain what happened to the album mentioned.

After his commercial training he served in the infantry in Koln for one year together with his brother Julius.

He started the firm "Greeff& Comp" In Hoboken (by New York), settled his first household there and obtained American citizenship.
His parents-in-law in Germany suffered keenly from the separation from their favourite daughter and since Ernst also found the ocean journey very arduous he moved back to Mainz in 1865. There he regained German citizenship, in order to afford his sons the possibility to satisfy the requirements for militarytraining at a later stage.
He then acquired a house in Haspeler street, Unterbarten where he took upresidence.
This house was sold after the death of his first wife in 1873; the Paulskirche was built in the garden.
With his second wife Ernst remained living in Barmen at first, but later moved with his family to Frankfurt am Main.
In 1893 he acquired the castle Moosburg, Guttingen, canton of Thurgau in Switzserland, but used itonly as a summer residence for the time being.
Because of his experience in German-American commerce and because of the esteem in which he was held Ernst Greeff became American Vice-Consul. The German government also acknowledged his work by conferring on him the order of the Red Eagle IV.
As a keen hunter he had undertaken hunts at Brilon, Honningen am Rhein, Taunus and in Hungary. Blessed with great hardiness by nature, he was able to shoot several stags in the Carpathian mountains at the age of 85. On his 80th birthday he still danced the waltz and eye witnesses report that at his age he still ran after a moving tram and jumped aboard

He studied agriculture in Hohenheim and Luxemburg and became leaseholder of the royal estate Adenroth in Wied, Nassau. In 1867 he obtained the estate in Porten by Bohwinkel, which he estranged again in 1903 in order to move to Barmen.
The Reformed congregation Barmen-Gemarke elected him as elder in 1906 and he served the congregation meritoriously till his death (Werth-Lauffs p.482)

Otto Greeff, for whom a business career was originally intended, had a marked artistic talent, which initially tipped the balance in his choice of career. He became a singer, but after suffering a throat disease changed to actor.

He started his atristic careeer by an engagement in Vienna. Presumably his voice impairment was the reason for turning to a business career after all. In this capacity he stayed in Vienna for the time being, then lived with his brother Ernst in Frankfurt for 2 years, and then moved to Kon-Lindenthal. He was the originator of the "Greeff Whistle" which served as recognition signal among the Greeffs for decades afterward ( From the waltz by Julius Schulhoff "Valse brillante"Op.5.)

(Medical):He suffered a throat disease which stopped his career as a singer.

Killed in Action at Konniggratz

Peter studied agriculture in Bonn-Poppelsdorf and in 1864 he inherited the manor Dussel from his grandfather Joh. Peter Bredt (see the specific chapter).
At theoutbreak of war in 1866 he was conscripted into the Heohenzollern Fusilier Regiment no. 40, was killed on 3 July 1866 by shellfire in the battle at Konniggratz and was buried in the cemetary at Problusz with two comrades.

Bernhard as well as his brother Emil lived with their families on Long Island in College Point, a small simple suburb of New york. They were partners in the firm "Greeff & Co." which their fathers started in 1857. The gardens of ther homes, near to the Sound were close together and separated only by the garden of Anton Rosingh.
He was a brother-in-law of both brothers Greeff, Emil's first marriage was to Emilie Rosingh. Being neighbours gave rise to a special bond between the families. The atmosphere in both houses was essentrially German, and until the world war only German was spoken at home. Both families always had German governesses. It was a real little German colony in College point. The family Adolf Erbsloh, who came from Barmen was very close to the Greeffs.
In the very musical family of Bernhard Greeff music was made every evening. The father played piano and the organ, the mother sang in a beautiful soft alto. In this way the children (born in America) learned all the wonderful German folk songs and childrens songs.
This was recreation for the men that had a streneuous working life, facing a long arduous journey early in the morning to the office in the city and back to their suburb in the evening.
Bernhard and his wife had an excedingly happy marriage and lived only for themselves and their children, to whom they were a shining example. Bernhards great goodness is shown by the fact that for about 30 years he played the organ in church every sunday, because the congregation was too poor to afford the services of an organist.

Sophie was born as the First daughter after 9 sons in the old house at no. 7 Reformed Church street, like all her siblings. After completion of her school training she attended a finishing school in Clarens (Lake Geneva) and following the death of her mother she had to run the household for her father. She accompanied her father on his last journey to America in 1871.
She bore her husband 8 children in the old house on Reformed Church street, thereafter moving with him to the Werth family home in Muhlenweg.

Notes:

"Minchen Greeff" was the first childhood friend of Henriette Koll, later married to Victor R. Bredt. As a child she was often a guest in the Greeff-Bredt house in the Reformed church street. The friendship was ended by the early death of Minchen Greeff.

Rudolf attended the secondary school in Barmen until 1859, then went to the firm "Fontaine & Meyerhoff: in Brussels for commercial training and further education in the French language. He returned early in 1861 and joined his fathers firm " J.P.Greeff, G.W. Sohn" where he became a partner on 1 May 1866. Rudolf was a member of the Board of the Society for the beautification of Barmen Building
Society fo Labourers houses and its Chairman 1900-1903. He was a member of the Chamber of Commerce 1891-1903 and member of the Royal Trade Court 1880-1890.
He was also member of the management of the Civic Savings Bank, member of the management of the Loans House, and member of the board of the Society for Arts. In the Reformed congregation of Gemarke he was a member of the Representation and Scholarch (Presbyter concerned with schooling.) 1898-1902.
He devoted himself specially to the maintenance and improvement of his property Haus Dussel, leased by his son Werner, for as long as the manor remained a family asset.

Emilie married Friedrich August (Fritz) CRAMER on 2 Feb 1882. Friedrich (son of Christian Friedrich CRAMER and Bertha HEILENBECK) was born on 27 Apr 1846; died on 29 Nov 1912 in Koln. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Notes:

He attended the school in Koln and entered a commercial apprenticeship in Frankfurt am Main, where he could indulge in his love for music in his free time. He had much encouragement in this from the Offenbach relatives, the Andre family, the former Mozart publishers.
For many years he was confidential clerk of the banking house Fink.
As a sincere nature lover he was anxious to leave the metropolis and in 1890 he took a post as fund manager with a bank in Weimar. When this bank was taken over by the Magdeburg Private Bank, and then by the Commercial and Private bank, he became an independent director. After a major operation he had to relinquish his post, sold his house in Weimar and moved to Heidelberg where his daughter lived.

Eduard married Johanna WOLFF on 12 Apr 1883 in Barmen. Johanna (daughter of Johann Heinrich WOLFF and Caroline WIRTH) was born on 16 Aug 1862 in Frankfurt Am Main; and died. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Notes:

He completed his apprenticeship in Frankfurt am Main, where his parents were living at the time.
Then he worked in Zurich and Bremen, where he had the chance to enter the chemical industry. Thereupon he went to England where he and a friend started the firm "Nolling & Greeff" which was short-lived because it did not promise sucess. In the year 1881 he founded his new business "R.W. Greeff & Comp. Ltd." which he brought to a considerable height. It became a global firm that was well regarded in the chemical industry and especially advanced in the manufacture of quinine.
Although his work prospered, the World War caused him to retire more and more from his life's work so that his firm was transformed into a public (Limited) company. His testament provided several endowments from his great wealth.

Robert married Toni WEINTRAUT on 27 Jun 1886 in Orpington. Toni (daughter of Fritz WEINTRAUT and Amalie BAUS) was born on 13 Dec 1868; died on 10 Jun 1931 in Bromley, Kent. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Paul first took up a career in business, but quite soon he started taking part as amateur in musical performances in Koln. In 1876 he decided to become an opera singer and took lessons from dr. Franz Kruckl.
Soon after completion of his studies he found an engagement at the court theatre in Dresden, where he successfully made his debut as the Komthur in Don juan in 1878. In 1880 he went to the City Theatre inNurnberg, in 1881 to the Opera House in Kolnn, in 1883 to the Court Theatre in Kassel, and in 1889 to the City Theatre in Frankfurt am Main.
On the stage as well as in concerts he showed a rich and much praised ability. His artistic repertoire was very large; he sang all serious bass roles and performed excellently in a large part of the basso buffo and humouristic roles. He had a large, textured and sonorous bass (from low C to high F and G)
His large imposing figure and his characterization stood him in very good stead in parts like Hagen, Daland, Bertram, Mephisto, King Mark, Sarastro, Marcel, Landgraf, Osmin, Falstaff and others.
At the Bayreuth Festival 1897he successfully sang the part of hagen three times and after his first appearance mrs Cosima Wagner sent him the letter to his wife, her reproduced in facwsimile.
He was holder of the Medal for art and science.

At the time when his youngest daugether could say nothing about his occupation, the distinguished opera singer, who could look back on a proud career and laurels at Beyreuth, was consulting Dr. Avellis, the throat, nose and ear specilist. The latter lay aside his mirror and grumbled:"you should pack in the damned smoking , my dear friend! it damages the voice box and causes chronic pharyngitis."
But the singer would have none of that. "You might as well kill me on the spot, doctor" he answered in his deep bass voice, the very bass that ensured his success. The doctor washed hishands. "Very well, I will allow you two cigars per day, but nothing more understood?"
"Yes doctor, much thanks."
Paul greef left with a sly smile. Minutes later he entered the shop of his tobacconist. The somewhat stout dealer searched assiduously on a shelf, snatched a box and cried, before the singer could utter anything- aside from the greeting- "I know Mr Greeff! Your brand 'La Corona' here we have it already. Ten cigars at twenty as always?"
Only now could Greef interrupt the flood of words of the tobacco-worn dealer: "You know nothing, my dear fellow, I may only smoke two cigars, my doctor has forbidden me more!"

He became a businessman and went to England at an early stage where he ahd the luck to enter the firm of his cousin Robert Greeff "R. W. Greeff & Comp" (branch Greeff-Andre II) virtually as a junior partner. After a few years the urge to be independant caused him to leave the firm again.
He came to regret this step, when the firm had developed to oe of the most significant in it's kind, while he himself suffered setbacks after many hopeful starts.
The difficult times during and after the war, together with the unfavourable economic conditions played a decisive role in this.
Although suffering from a serious heart disease from his 55th year he managed to win through every time by dint of his sparkling mind and his indomitable will to live. At the age of 72 he had to resign from his business activities as a result of his worsening heart condition.
The sense of kinship which he had proved by deeds freed him from cares.

Because war made business impossible he bought a property "Durfold Hall", 132 Morgan in extent, which he sold at a profit after the war. He then moved to his son Hugo at Canterbury, and in 1924 to Los Gatos in California (65km south of San Francisco), where he found a new fatherland.

Medical doctor practising in Volkershausen. He studied medicine in Tubingen and showed special interest in anatomy, in particular in themusculature of the face. After the state examination he was voluntary assistant by Rudolf Virchow, then assistantdoctor by Lohmann at the White Stag by Dresden.
Later he turned to anthropological studies that took him to different countries and parts of the earth with partial assistance by the state of Prussia. On these travels he made plaster casts of faces and entire heads of living persons, from an artistic as well as a scientific point of view, especially inSweden and the Caucasus.
His collection in Volershausen, which was often visited by scholars from elsewhere, comprised some 1500 pieces.

Peter became an artist and studied in Dusseldorf and Karlsruhe under Professor Schonleber and lived in Dusseldorf at the time where he was the chairman of the Association of Dusseldorf Artists at times.

He passed his Abitur at the gymnasium in Barmen, studied law in Geneva, Leipzig and Bonn, became an articled clerk in 1908 and assessor in 1913.
At first he was informationally involved with the Barmen Bank society in Dussel dorf, but then went away to war. He was trained in the Hussar Regiment no 9 in Strassburg and then served until the end of the war with Hussar Field Regiment no.9 since middle 1917 as officer.
In1920 he became district court councillor in Elberfeld.
For the first years of marriage they lived in Dusseldorf, then in Hammerstein by Vohwinkel, and in 1916 Mrs Greeff moved to Barmen, which remained their residence (amToelleturm) until 1930. Next to it was a small farmhouse on the grounds of Haus Dussel as summer residence. In 1930 the house in Barmen was sold, the farmhouse enlarged and since then the family lived in Kamp by Dussel on an area of 10 morgen which was subdivided from the manor.

In between he served as trainee and volunteer on estates in Westfalen, schleswig-Holstein, Mecklenburg and Hessen-Nassau.
Early in 1913 he took over the manor of Dussel and managed it till 1927.
Then he leased the estate, but reserved the manor house.
In the World War he served as officer with the Trains Column from Sep 1914 until Mar 1916, lastly with the Infantry Munitions /Column of the VII. Reserve Corps in France.

Rittergut Dussel

Landowner/farmer. Owned Gut Düssel from 1913. Served in WWI from 1914 to 1916. Lived off the family's capital after Gut Düssel was destroyed and sold in 1945.

He attended the industrial school in Chemnitz, studied in Stuttgart and Dresden and attained doctorates in engineering and chemistry. As such he entered the chemical factory "Society for Chemical and Metallurgical Production in Aussig.
In 1915 he was called up for military service but was soon reclaimed for the factory.
As a member of the German State he was forced to leave the country in 1934 and became director of the newly established Gas Black factory in Oranienburg near Berlin.

He attended the model school (secondary school) in Frankfurt am main. His highest ambition, to become a naval doctor, foundered on the lacking sharpness of sight in one eye.
Because of this he abandoned his studies in medicine and became an actor.
After his completion of his one year of voluntary service n Field Artillery Regiment no. 63 in Kastell he found an engagement as youthful amateur and stage director on several German stages.
He then changed his occupation and found good employment as technical merchant with the Sachsenwerk in Dresden. he served in the World War as Lieutenant in the Reserve of Field Artillery Regiment no. 12.
After a wound sustained in Dec 1914 on the western front had healed he came to Galicia in Feb 1915. During the withdrawel of troop from Rumania in autumn 1918 he was again wounded and had to be left behind in Corabia. However he could be brought to Germany in a cattle truck of the last train of Field Marshal von Mackensen's army, where his relatives could receive him after months of uncertainty, happy although badly wounded.
In October 1919 the Sachensenwerk in Dresden transferred him to Leipzig as department manager, where he died as a consequence of his wounds.

At the completion of his two years training (1908-1910) with the firm "Pfister & Vogel, Leather Comp," In Frankfurt am Main he worked for them for a further three years.
In April 1913 he joined the Infantry Bodyguard Regiment no 115 in Mainz as a one year volunteer. After six months he became a lance-corporal and after nine months non-commissioned officer and condidate officer.
After completion of his priod of service and some weeks before the war broke out he was appointed by the firm 'Leopold Casella & Co., Ltd." and earmarked for a position abroad. The war put an end to his hopes for an appointment abroad, for on the 22nd Aug 1914 he lost a leg in the battle at Neuf-Chateau, in which he earned the Cross of Honour class II.
At the end of May 1915 he could resume his post with the above-mentioned firm despite his grave physical handicap, and in 1923 he received full authority to act.
With the amalgamation of his firm with the I. G. Farbenindustrie Ltd. he retained his employment; in April 1935 he received power of attorney.

Before her marriage Herta was active as opera soubrette on a series of German stages, such as Breslau, Gotha, Darmstadt, Braunschweig and Mainz.
It was about the turn of the nineteenth century. In a school in Oberusel, Hessen, the teacher had been given a "new" class and was busy finding out the names of the pupils and the social standing of their parents.
With one little girl there seemed to be something seriously lacking about the occupation of the father.
To all the friendly "coaching" byt the teacher: is he a shoemaker? or a baker? or does he own a shop? Is he an official? the answer was a dismal "nNo"
At last she lost her patience:"Well, Your father must do something!" she snapped.
"Oh yes" the little girl replied, both startled and relieved, "he sits in 'Falstaff' and drinks champagne!"
