    'n Keerpunt was bereik aan die Kaap in 1715, toe die veiligheid van die vry-burgers sodanig verswak het dat die VOC nie meer in staat was om hulle te beskerm nie. Na die soveelste aanval, waartydens die huis van Pieter Rossouw afgebrand was en die vry-burgers se beeste gesteel is, pleit die boere by die politieke raad vir toestemming om 'n vergeldingskommando bymekaar te maak. Op Woensdag, 20 November 1715, word 'n kommando van 30 vrywillegers onder die bevel van "burgervaandrig" Schalk Willemsz van der Merwe en "wagtmeester" Jan Harmensz Potgieter opdrag gegee om die boesmans wat die aanval gedoen het te gaan soek en die gesteelde beeste terug te bring. Gedurende hierdie ekspidiesie wond Jan Harmensz 'n boesmanvrou noodlottig. In die notules van die Politieke Raad van Dinsdag, 7 January 1716, gee Jan Harmensz, wat beskryf word as 'n vry-burger van Stellenbosch, sy verslag oor die ekspidisie.
    Jan was aangekla voor die Krygsraad en baie jare daarna, na baie oorweging en verdere getuinisse voor die Krygsraad, is Jan uiteindelik op 14 October 1727 ontslaan uit die weermag op grond van "gevorderde ouderdom en onbehoorlike gedrag". Hierdie ekspediesie merk die begin van die kommandostelsel in Suid Afrika, waarvolgens die beskerming van die plattelandse mense in die hande van vrywillige burgers gelaat word.     Johannes Potgieter, is ongeveer 1674 gebore (hy is op 23 September 1674 gedoop aan die Kaap). Hy was die eerste Potgieter wat op Suid-Afrikaanse bodem gebore is. Johannes, ook bekend as Jan Harmensz Potgieter, het 24 Jul 1702 met Clara Herbst (* 1687), die dogter van Johannes Herbst van Bremen en Lysbeth Sanders, getrou. By Clara het Johannes 3 dogter gehad. Hul eerste dogter, Johanna, was in 1704 gebore (~ 3 April 1704) en het jonk (voor 1714) gesterf. Hul tweede dogter, Elizabeth, gebore ongeveer 1711 (~ 6 November 1709) het op 29 September 1726 met Andries Pieter de Jager getrou. Johannes en Clara se derde dogter, Isabella (of soms ook Sibella genoem) is in 1711 gebore (~ 28 Junie 1711) en is 9 Maart 1727 met Philippe du Preez getroud. Philippe het die plaas Grootvadersbosch besit.

    Op 18 Februarie 1714 trou Johannes weer met Maria Catharina van Eeden (* 13 Februarie 1692), die dogter van Jan Janse van Eeden en Maria Russaar. By Maria het hy 7 kinders (3 dogter en 4 seuns) gehad. Die twee oudste dogters, Hester (~ 23 Februarie 1716) en Emmerentia (~ 20 Oktober 1719) is met die twee Botha broers, Christoffel en Jacobus, getroud. Hierdie huwelikke is van belang aangesien daar vir eeue daarna vriendskappe tussen die twee families sou wees en vele huwelike sou tussen hierdie families plaasvind. Johannes en Maria se derde kind, Johannes, is in 1722 gebore (~ 1 Maart 1722). Hierdie seun is met Aletta van Rooyen getrou. Sy agter-kleinseun, Cornelis Potgieter was later is die volgende eeu 'n baie bekende politikus in die Transvaal en was die voorsitter van die Transvaalse Volksraad. Johannes en Maria se vierde kind, Frederik (~ 11 Junie 1724), is eers met Eva Catharina Kriel en later met Maria Magdalena Landman getroud. Hy het in totaal 18 kinders (waarvan 10 seuns) gehad. On 17 Nov., 1722 he was exempted from millitary service due to a physical defect ("Resolusies van die Politieke raad Deel VI 1720-1723") On the 13th March, 1731 an incident, in which Hans was involved, was discussed in the political council. Ten Bushmen (sons of Grebenau) stole cattle from the farmar Hans Jurgen Potgieter after which they were followed and found by 12 burgers. The bushmen started shooting arrows at the burgers ("Resolusies van diePolitieke raad Deel VI 1729-1734").

    In the de la Fonteine report, comentary is given that could make a living from his cattle and farm, but not without debt (1732). It his also mentioned that Frederick Huppenaar (son of his sister) lived with him as servant. On 13 April, 1738, after his death, his wife Cornelia remarried Cornelis van Rooyen from Gorinchem, Netherlands.

    Hans was 'n soldaat in diens van die VOC. Op 17 November 1722 word Hans vrygestel van die weermag as gevolg van 'n ligaamlike gebrek.

    Hans en Cornelia het 9 kinders (3 seuns en 6 dogter) gehad. Aangesien die gemeenskap in die Drakenstein / Stelenbosch gebied maar klein was, was dit daardie tyd maar moeilik om 'n man of vrou te vind wat nie reeds familiebande gehad het nie. Hul oudste seun, Hermanus (~ 15 Julie 1721), trou met sy niggie, Elsie Botha. Martha (~ 13 September 1722) het met Hermanus Steyn (s.v. Jacobus Steyn en Maria Potgieter) getrou. Elsie (~ 3 Februarie 1726) trou met Philippus Snuman, Isabella (~ 14 September 1727) trou met Anthony Lombaard en later met Christiaan Godlieb Lessing, Catharina (~ 2 Desember 1731) trou eers met haar neef Petrus Botha. Haar tweeling suster, Maria (~ 2 Desember 1731) het met hul neef Johannes Lodewikus du Preez getrou. Na Maria se dood trou Johannes en Catharina. Niks is verder bekend oor Hans en Cornelia se 5de kind, Amerentia (~ 5 Februarie 1730).

    Jacobus was 'n burger van die Swellendam distrik. Die Potgieters was altyd aan die voorpunt van die uitbreiding van die beskawings-lyne. Harmen Jansz was een van die eerste inwoners aan die Eersterivier, lank voor die dorp Stellenbosch daar gestig is. Vyf generasies later sou Andries Hendrik die stigter van vele republieke word. Andries se Oupa, Jacobus was egter ook reeds meer as vyftig jaar voor hom besig om die grenslyne te verskuif. Op 1 Mei 1775 het PA Myburg 'n verslag op las van die companje opgestel oor die oos-grense van die Kaap kolonie. In sy verslag meld hy dat Louis Nel, Jacobus Potgieter, Frans Labuschagne, Willem Prinsloo, sen. Hendrik Kriegler, Claas Prinsloo, jun. Johannes (Hannes) Kloppers, Hendrik Kloppers en Johannes (Jan) Nortje, sen. wat tot die Swellendam behoort alreeds saam met hul families en vee aan die oorkant van De Bruins Hoogte (Bruintjieshoogte) gevestig het om goeie plase te vind wat weiding en water aan hul vee sou verskaf. Bruintjieshoogte is 'n bergreeks tussen Somerset East en Cradock. Later sou hierdie omgewing die Cradock distrik word (Moodey III,b48). Nadat die companje vestiging buite die grense verbied het het die burgers (en ook A Kruger, Dirk Schalkwyk, Pieter Wllimsz Nel, Willem Prinsloo Jnr. en Hendrik Prinsloo) op 10 November 1774 hulle redes gegee hoekom hulle oorkant die grense moes vestig en toestemming gevra om daar te bly. Die burgers was almal arm en kon die plundery van hul vee deur die Hottentotte nie meer bekostig nie. (Moody III,b39) Ander burgers wat ook daar gevestig was in 1775 was Christoffel Botha, Helgaart Muller, Theunis Botha Cz, Cornelis Bezuidenhout Wz, Jan Oosthuizen sen, Jan Oosthuize jun. (van Sneeuberg). Die burgers wat aan die Sondagsrivier gevestig het was Willem Botha Fz, Frederik Botha sen., en Jan Du Plessis (van Swellendam). Coert Grobbelaar van Swellendam het aan die suidekant van De Bruins Hoogte gevestig (Moody III,b48). Baie van die burgers het in armoede daar gewoon en party het saam gewoon op 'n plaas. Op 1 April 1777 het kommandant Opperman verslag gegee dat die burgers, onder bevel van sersant A H Kruger sou weier om diens in die kommando te doen (Moody III,b66).
