Medical doctor practising in Volkershausen. He studied medicine in Tubingen and showed special interest in anatomy, in particular in themusculature of the face. After the state examination he was voluntary assistant by Rudolf Virchow, then assistantdoctor by Lohmann at the White Stag by Dresden.
Later he turned to anthropological studies that took him to different countries and parts of the earth with partial assistance by the state of Prussia. On these travels he made plaster casts of faces and entire heads of living persons, from an artistic as well as a scientific point of view, especially inSweden and the Caucasus.
His collection in Volershausen, which was often visited by scholars from elsewhere, comprised some 1500 pieces.
