Boelie Greeff

The translation of cartoon strips has fascinated me ever sice the late Prof Combrink introduced me to the topic at Stellenbosch University in 1992. He collected mistranslations, and took great pleasure in that fact that a cartoon character could say "eend" to someone at whose head an axe had been thrown. In the present case I am curious to know whether the surname was chosen by the translator for no good reason, or whether it appears in the original, to pun on 'grief' (as in 'good grief!' and 'don't give me grief').

Owner of originalThanks to Ann Tiran for the cartoon from 'Die Burger'.
