Text | a1: Johannes BRESLER born abt 1732 from Kassel-Hesse, Germany (Prussia) arrived in the Cape 1752 and was in the service of Dutch East Indian Company as a carpenter. He started work on the new organ of the "Groote Kerk", Cape Town. Then became a constable from 1758 to 1761, and later was in the service of the fire brigade. In 1761 he was registered as an explosive expert. Quote Dictionary of Familiers volumes 1-5: "Johannes was a German organ-maker from Hessen-Kassel who arrived in Cape Town in 1752 and, consecutively, was soldier, carpenter, constable and 'pyrotechnist extraordinary" He died 13 Oct 1773 in Cape Town. In letters found in the archives Johannes is refered to as "Extraordinary Lieutenant of Artillery" In 1768 the slave Catrijn Sangolanhij has an expiration of apprenticeship - Johannes was her registered master. Johannes applied to free one of the Company's slaves, a little boy named Abel, the son of Catrijn Sangolanij of the Cape, about 6 years old. He wished to take the boy unto himself, and when baptized, give it an honest and Christian education. Offered f100, Indian valuation, for the child. Johannes married 13 Sept 1761 in Cape Town to Sara Dreyer christened 22 Aug 1723 in Cape Town. Sara was the daughter of Johannes Augustus Dreyer ( also known as Isaac Daique) born 1668 Grube in Holstein, Germany and Sara van wyk (see notes at end ). S ara turned to her youngest son Frans to assist her with financial matters after the death of Johannes. Sara gave Frans special power of attorney to act on her behalf. He assisted with the sale of her home in Boom Street, Cape Town in 1800. Johannes married 12 Nov 1780 Anna Christina Immelman christened 26 June 1757 daughter of Justus Ludolf Immelmann born 1731 and Sara Christina van Steenwyck born 1735. In 1782 Johannes was involved with the erection of a new building (French hospital) for the sick of the Pondicherry Regiment. Him and his partner Johannes Henricus Redelinghuijs suffered major losses which eventually resulted in the building being demolished….leveled to the ground. Johannes was also the contractor for supplying provisions …bread, flour, meat, wine, fuel, etc. to the French Hospital. Johannes was one of the leaders of the 'Cape Patriots' and together with three other leaders sailed to Holland in 1785 to submit a petition on behalf of the Cape Patriots to the Government in Amsterdam for a written constitution, seats for burghers on the administrative council and high court, freedom to trade, and the right to flog their slaves without official restraint. Between the years 1816 - 1829 Johannes was registered as a retailer at 67 Lange St, Cape Town ______________ c2: Johannes Augustus BRESLER born 31 Aug 1783 Cape Town christened 25 Sept 1783, citizen of Cape Town. Johannes first married in court on 23 Feb 1806 to Catharina Magdalena BERNARDI ( Bernhardt) born abt 1785 in Cape Town - died 13 April 1838 at 96 Lange St Cape Town. Catharine was the daughter of Frederick Jacob BERNARDI and Johanna GREEF. Johannes married again on 1 Aug 1838 in the Lutherian Church Beaufort, Cape to Johanna Gerharda Susanna de Jongh (De Villiers… GISA has double surname de Jong de Villiers) (Gerharda Suusanna) christened 15 Apr 1798 - died 24 Oct 1879 was the daughter of Jacobus de JONG and Anna Elizabeth LOUW. Between 1813 and 1818 the African Court Book has Johannes registered to 13 Plein St with a Saddlery. ______________ d2: Jacoba Elizabeth BRESLER born abt 1845/ 1851 in Riversdale Cape. Married about 1872 in Riversdale, Cape to Christiaan Jacobus VAN ZYL born 3 Aug 1833 in Cape on 5 Oct 1869 in Riversdale, Cape, South Africa. Christiaan was the son of Petrus Jacobus van Z yl and Jacoba Elizabeth de JAGER Jacoba and Christiaan had issue: e1: Johannes August VAN ZYL <http://claude.boisseau.free.fr/RINKEN/pafg933.htm> was born on 25 Sep 1873 in Riversdale, Cape, South Africa. He died in 1954 in Cape Town, Cape, South Africa. He married on 25 Mar 1903 in Riversdale, Cape, South Africa. To Cornelia Dorothea PRETORIUS born on 6 Jun 1883 in Riversdale, Cape, South Africa. She died in 1964 in Brooklyn, Cape Town, Cape, South Africa. They had the following children: f1: Christiaan Jacobus VAN ZYL was born on 15 Aug 1906 in Riversdale, Cape, South Africa. He died on 22 Mar 1963 in Riversdale, Cape, South Africa. He married Amie Marion RUDMAN was born on 4 Oct 1910 in Uitenhage, Cape, South Africa. She died about 1965 in Uitenhage, Cape, South Africa. | |
